“Core shadows, cast shadows, form shadows, blocking, negative space, outline…”
My figure drawing teacher speaks this strange dialect as he bounds around the room like an energizer bunny. He begins our figure drawing classes with a slide show mixed with images of master drawings and skeletons. He points out the bones labeling them with their scientific names followed by measurements.
Did you know that the pelvic bone width is equal to one and a quarter of your head’s length?
After our whirlwind tour of the human anatomy, our model disrobes and strikes a pose. We then spend the next six hours struggling to meta morph their figure onto our blank pages. This is my typical Monday at the San Francisco Art Academy.
I am over my mid-semester slump and can see the glimmer of winter break on the horizon. The irony of wishing that the winter break would come sooner is not that I need a break from art.
Being an artist is my dream.
That anticipation of the winter break is that I can not wait to get out and paint those winter hills and cows.
My first semester of grad school has been filled with two drawing classes and a still life course. My passion for painting is landscapes. There is so much homework, that I have not been able to paint any lately and those green hills are calling me.
As for my 2010 dream of painting in Italy and mini-triathlon, I am still dreaming.
My Italy painting dream includes a tour of Florence with its amazing museums, a side trip to Rome with the Sistene Chapel, and a week of pure painting pleasure of beautiful old stone architecture. Now I need to turn the fantasy into reality.
For the Wild Flower Sprint dream, I went to the gym this week and did two long walks.
I have been brainstorming ways to earn money for Italy. Someone recently told me about an artist who raised money for a trip by pre-selling paintings that were to be created on her trip.
