You Don’t Have to Fix Yourself Before Going After Your Dream

Last updated on July 26th, 2012 at 01:52 pm

south san francisco convention centerMy feet still feel like a puppy gnawed on them all day as I am still recovering from what was a very long day with Heather in South San Francisco at a Marcia Weider event that ran from 9:00am to 7:00pm.

Add in the hour and a half ride there and the two our ride home and I doubt Heather and I did much more than soak our feet today.

If you ask me what my thoughts are after spending all day watching a dream coach talk about achieving your dreams, I came away with this, my own Catherine thoughts on dreaming:

You don’t have to fix yourself in order to go after your dream.

I think you just have to take one small chance on yourself — do one small thing that allows you to dream.  I do not believe that you need to change who you are to be a successful dreamer.  This is where I probably differ from quite a few life coaches.

Many people have created positive change in the world from the depths of devastation.

In the middle of what isn’t working in your life and dealing with the  perfectly flawed human that you are (like the rest of us) you only need to give yourself permission to play with your dream ideas.

That’s all you need. Nothing more.

I believe that some of the greatest dreams and dreams stories come from those people who faced what seemed like insurmountable personal setbacks, personal problems, and fractured lives, yet still continued on.

Dreaming is not about eliminating parts of yourself that you don’t like, or you don’t think are good enough; it’s about listening to that voice in your head that is telling you over and over that you need to give something (that you know that you love) a try.

And the dream nag may appear right at the time when your life is a complete mess. Like having children, there is no perfect time to start your dream.

You just stay open to possibilities and step over the messes in your life.

Think of someone who dreams of hiking to the top of a mountain, but they’ve been living their life as a couch potato.  To begin their dream they just need to begin by walking to the end of the block.  With that small effort they’ve taken that first step towards achieving their dream.  They don’t have to change who they are, or how they feel — they just need to put one foot in front of the other and take one more step every day.  Eventually, if they keep at it, they will climb that mountain.

The change will happen automatically over time.

This is the reason I created 8 Women Dream — to show the world what REAL dreaming looks like — the good, the bad and the ugly.  I want you to read this website and say to yourself, “If THEY can do it – I can do it too!”  You get a front row seat to watch us work our dreams — with our many flaws and imperfections.

If you give your dream a chance you will find that little by little, year after year, one mess at a time, one step at a time, your life will begin to resemble more your dream and less your messes. You dream will morph and change, just as working on it will morph and change you.

It’s a work in progress, just like you.

And you are capable of achieving your dream right from where you are.

Even with sore feet.

Catherine
