As a child I never considered a career as an artist even though I was always surrounded by creative people and loved making big creative messes. The bigger the better! Both my parents had dreams of being artists then had me in their late teens and segued into other careers. I thought I wanted to be an architect and took many years of drafting but never enjoyed it.
It was at my unhappiest moment of life that I had what Oprah calls my “AHA!” moment.
I was working at a very stressful job and had three boys at home, two were teens. I had this drive to go back to school and had just earned my A.A. degree from the Junior College and needed to decide on a major to apply to college. Around that time I read an article that said that your passion that brings you the most joy will be what your the most successful at. So I sat back and thought about my most happy moments.
They included; spending weekends camping on the beach at a raku (pottery) festivals, making elaborate sculptural wedding cakes, taking figure drawing classes with my favorite uncle, watercolor classes with my father, making paper mache projects… It was obvious.
So here I am seven years later and I am an artist. I am now attending Grad School at The San Francisco Academy of Art.  I am in my second week and am frantically juggling my job teaching art, family and homework. So far, I have not dropped any balls.
Last Friday I taught my first adult painting workshop in my studio. I was nervous but the group that showed up were great and they all want to come back.
