In last week’s post, Top Photographer Dreams of Winning the Sony World Photography Awards I highlighted the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards – with the thought that any dreamer with a passion for photography can enter — no matter what your experience, skill, and equipment.
If the world stage is a bit overwhelming for you, consider a few other lower profile contests to get your feet wet.
Top 7 Photo Contests to Challenge Top Photographer Dreams—
1. Worldwide Photowalk
I’ve participated in this one twice. It is a photo contest disguised as a nice leisurely walk through your own hometown.
Scott Kelby is sponsoring this 3rd annual world wide photo walk, where on October 1-2, thousands of photographers from around the world will ‘walk’ – in organized groups of 50 – capturing the essence of their part of the world.
After the walk there is a local contest judge that picks the winner from the 50, and then that image is sent to Kelby for the grand prize consideration.
They will be announcing the routes soon, so keep this one bookmarked.
2. 7Fund
“I am an Entrepreneur” contest. The 7 Fund is sponsoring this challenge in the hopes of gathering stunning photos profiling individual entrepreneurs from around the globe…but not your average ‘entrepreneur.”
Often, the imagery associated with developing nations captures the misery that accompanies poverty.
They believe that developing nations also represent tremendous opportunities for hope. This contest strives to re-frame the dialogue around solutions to poverty by infusing the world’s imagination with new imagery that focuses on entrepreneurship.
Check out the website for ideas, the photos are amazing.
3. 2011 Baseball Photo Contest from Sports Travel and Tours
Here you go, fellow baseball fans.
The Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce and Sports Travel and Tours is sponsoring their first ever sports photo contest.
The cool thing is that winners are chosen by readers, and the grand prize is a baseball spring training trip to either Arizona or Florida in 2012.
Deadline for entries is October 31st.
Check out their Facebook pages at Facebook.com/SportsTravelInc for more details.
4. 2012 International Conservation Photography Awards
The ICP Awards will recognize and celebrate images that focus on conservation and the environment.
The winners of this contest will have their images displayed for 3 months in the prestigious Burke Museum of Natural History in Seattle, Washington.
Images will also be published in major magazines and used for outreach and teaching programs.
5. The Communication Arts Photography Competition
Communication Arts sponsors many contests in the arts, and this year their photography competition is wide open — with categories like “advertising”, “self promotion”, and “unpublished”.
The only rule is that your photo is printed or produced between March of 2011 – March 2012.
“CA’s Award of Excellence is one of the most-coveted awards in the industry. If chosen, winning places you in the highest ranks of your profession. Ask any creative director which competitions rank as the most influential and they’ll place Communication Arts at the top of the list.”
6. Small Animal Channel.com Ferrets USA Photo Contest 2012
OK Ferret Lovers.
A photo contest just for you.
Submit a photo of your ferret in one of two categories: 1 – Holiday Celebrations or 2 – Snuggle Time to win some cash prizes and a chance for your ferret to be on the cover of Small Animal Channel Magazine. **contest does not say you need to own the ferret yourself to enter.
And the website offers these “Helpful Hints”:
1. Get close. Allow the scenery to complement your ferret, not compete with it.
2. Get down – photograph at your pet’s level. Position yourself on the ground or place your ferret on a platform or table so your camera is facing your ferret.
3. Make sure your ferret is in focus with adequate lighting.
4. Ask a friend or two for help. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a great photo because you’re trying to do too many things at one time. Have an assistant attract the animal’s attention toward the camera.
5. Make sure your ferret is well-groomed and in peak condition.
6. Don’t forget to have fun!
7. The Nature Conservancy 6th Annual Digital Photography Competition
The Nature Conservancy invites all photographers to enter their 6th annual photo competition.
Photos can be taken anywhere in the world, showing animal behavior, portraits of wildlife, plant life, natural landscapes, weather or people interacting with nature.
They are looking for striking images of nature, highlighting the diversity of life on earth. (A snapshot of your dog in the pool will not qualify).
Deadline for entries is December 2011.
There are many more photo contests out there, photography dreamers. Seek them out. Challenge yourself to be seen. It’s a step on your dream path to becoming top photographer.
