Marcia Wieder, CEO and Founder of Dream University, and I agree on many aspects of recognizing your purpose and pursuing your big dream. One main point on which we are completely in sync is the importance of knowing yourself to accomplish your dream successfully.
To quote Marcia, dreaming requires asking yourself, “Who are you on the inside? What is most important to you in life? Do you really know?”
Our dreams are extensions of ourselves. To live a dream-come-true life, you must invest time and effort in self-discovery.
If you are unwilling to invest in self-discovery, you will likely abandon your dream at the beginning, the middle, or just before success. Understanding yourself and why you want your dream will save you when you feel like giving up.
Here’s a story I’d like to share from Marcia’s e-book, “Finding Your Dream” (not to be confused with my e-book of the same title) called “Quality of Life”:
Living a dream-come-true life is more about creating a certain quality of life than finding a particular dream. For many, this process starts by discovering or accomplishing a special dream, like establishing the relationship or career of our dreams. When my friend Larry went to Penn State, he was described as a “young genius,” having been an honors student and football star in high school. It shocked us all, especially when he nearly flunked out during his first semester.
Larry dragged himself back into the architectural engineering program as long as he could stand it, which wasn’t very long. The truth was, he was an artist, not an engineer. He dreamed of being the next Frank Lloyd Wright, but art wasn’t prized in his small farm town. So, he sold out on his dream by focusing on the technical side of architecture instead of the artistic aspect he loved.
Finally, he couldn’t take it any longer. As Larry began to find himself, he found the strength and courage to pursue his dream. He reclaimed his identity as an artist and now lives his dream of being a successful designer.
It’s useful to know our personal and professional dreams and come to terms with what we want. Ultimately, what we seek is a new way of living. Finding or making your dreams come true is wonderful, but the essence of living a dream-come-true life requires going deeper.
Marcia and I have exercises to help dreamers get to know themselves so they don’t “flunk out” in their first semester of dreaming. Marcia also has 10 simple ways to begin recognizing your dream:
10 Simple Ways to Recognize Your Purpose:
- Energy and enthusiasm = passion.
- Signs are popping up all around you.
- Thinking about “it” all the time.
- Clarity and/or confusion (and yes, confusion can be a sign).
- Ease and grace — it flows.
- Knowing and trusting — you just know on some level.
- Shortcuts appear.
- Connections appear.
- Just for you — your life experiences make your dream a perfect fit.
- Joy and abundance.
Is any of this ringing true for you?
