When Is A Dream Really A Dream?

Last updated on July 27th, 2014 at 09:50 pm

You think you have a dream to do something, be something, go somewhere, or be with someone. You have been reading our site here at 8 Women Dream (thank you). You have read about the ups, downs and successes we have all been experiencing. You have read and watched some of the most amazing motivational posts out there.

And now you think you are ready to start pursuing your dream.

But you hesitate.

You are wondering how do you know if your dream is really a dream and not just a passing fancy.

Anything you think you want to do – you should try to do.

Isn’t that exciting?

I know it is a bit overwhelming at first, but try to see it as an open door. The raising of the curtain on the play that is your life. Every step you take to make that dream a reality will change you in some way. You will gain knowledge about your dream, and more importantly, about yourself.

My dream is to be an author of captivating books. I have had that dream as long as I can remember. I have not always thought about it, or even considered it an actual possibility. But it was there, buried in the attic of my mind like an old stuffed bear just waiting to be found and embraced.

For me, identifying that dream was relatively easy. But what if you have more than one dream? What if, as you work to achieve one dream you identify another?

I believe that I am currently in the middle of realizing a new dream. I signed up to take a class thinking it would help my resume and my writing. I only planned to take the one class. Then this week I signed up for another.

While it is true that these classes will help my writing, they are actually on the path toward a medical career.

I do not want to be a doctor – – at least I don’t think I do. I am, however, mightily intrigued by the subject. I haven’t actually identified the dream yet, but I recognize the feeling. It’s kind of like the feeling you get when you are at the top of the roller coaster just beginning to go over the hill.

You’re scared and excited all at the same time and even though you know your stomach will be in your throat in a matter of seconds you would never try to get off.

Throughout our lives we move in and out of different relationships, careers and personal wants and needs. It is my belief that our dreams will change as we orbit around ourselves and others.

Then again as we grow and mature and when we, hopefully, realize that being mature isn’t necessarily the best thing in all circumstances.

How do you know when a dream is really a dream?

For me it’s when I get that roller coaster feeling. For you it may be slightly different. But I think for everyone it is when you are afraid to go after it because you have a fear of failing. The thought of failing means the end of something that means so much. So you’d rather continue “thinking” about it and “dreaming” about it, rather than taking the chance that you might lose.

I say take steps today to recognize your dream. Make a little plan of action and work toward it every day.

You will be amazed at what you may find.

In the meantime I’m over here studying for my final.
