What is Success: A Tapestry of Perspectives

Last updated on October 13th, 2023 at 09:14 pm

Success quote: The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible by ClarkeSuccess, an elusive and often sought-after prize, is as diverse as the people who define it. It transcends mere monetary achievements and encompasses an intricate fabric of life experiences and personal growth.

As part of my journey to achieve my dream of being a life coach, I often explore various definitions of success from successful people, searching for unique and thought-provoking perspectives that I reflect upon to see if their ideas work for me.

1. Thomas J. Watson on Embracing Failure:

The former chairman and CEO of IBM, Thomas J. Watson, offered a profound perspective on success. He encouraged us to redefine our relationship with failure, asserting, “Success is not the absence of failure; it’s the result of doubling your failure rate. Failure, far from being the enemy of success, is its ally. You can either be discouraged by failure or learn from it. So, make mistakes, and make as many as possible because, amidst those missteps, you’ll discover the true essence of success.”

Reflection: Do I find success in my failures?

2. Mark Victor Hansen on Starting Imperfectly:

Best-selling author Mark Victor Hansen’s definition of success centers on the idea that you don’t need perfect conditions to begin. He advises, “Success isn’t about waiting for everything to align perfectly. It’s about embracing challenges, surmounting obstacles, and thriving in less-than-ideal circumstances. So, start now. With every step you take, you’ll grow stronger, more skilled, self-confident, and ultimately, more successful.”

Reflection: Is success about letting go of the quest for perfection?

3. Kellie Snyder on the Uniqueness of Success:

Author Kellie Snyder emphasizes the individuality of success. She defines it as “Achieving a personal goal or conquering a dilemma and feeling profound joy and pride. Success isn’t necessarily tied to a rigid plan, as missteps often lead to new and better opportunities. It’s a unique journey, distinct for each person. Success means upward movement, pushing boundaries, and seizing opportunities through unwavering passion and determination.”

Reflection: Do I believe in the uniqueness of my success?

4. Ralph Waldo Emerson on Making the World Better:

Renowned poet Ralph Waldo Emerson’s definition of success is a testament to our impact on the world. He proclaims, “Success is not about wealth or status; it’s about laughing often, earning the respect of the wise, and the love of children. It’s about winning the appreciation of honest critics, enduring the betrayal of false friends, and appreciating beauty. True success lies in leaving the world better, whether through a healthy child, a garden, or social change. It’s about knowing that one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is the essence of success.”

Reflection: Is my success defined by making the world a better place?

5. The Dictionary’s Definition of Success:

The dictionary defines success as “The favorable or prosperous outcome of one’s efforts. It’s about achieving wealth, status, honors, or similar accomplishments. Notable performances or achievements mark success.”

Reflection: Does success have to include wealth according to this definition?

6. Richard St. John on Success as a Journey:

Popular TED speaker Richard St. John simplifies success as a continuous journey.

Reflection: Is my understanding of success aligned with it being an ongoing journey?

Ultimately, these diverse interpretations remind us that success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It’s a personal voyage, a dynamic journey, and an ever-evolving narrative. Remember that success is not a fixed destination but a multifaceted concept defined by your unique experiences, values, and aspirations. The wisdom shared by these thought leaders–from embracing failure to letting go of perfection, leaving a positive impact, and understanding that success is a continuous journey–all offer invaluable insights.

Your path to success is yours alone, and it may not always be straightforward or free from obstacles. Embrace your failures as stepping stones, take the first step even when conditions aren’t perfect, and appreciate the individuality of your success.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, true success lies in making the world a better place and leaving a positive legacy. Your journey towards your dreams should align with your values and the betterment of those around you.

Most importantly, understand that success is not a static endpoint but a dynamic and ongoing adventure. It’s in the constant pursuit of improvement, personal growth, and the relentless drive to make your dreams a reality.

So, take these diverse perspectives on success as inspiration. Let them guide you in your pursuit, and keep your unique definition of success close to your heart. Remember that success is not a one-size-fits-all concept, and your journey is as extraordinary as your dreams. You can chart your own course toward success step by step, challenge by challenge, and dream by dream.
