Big Dream Achievement: What is Success?

Last updated on November 6th, 2019 at 02:25 pm

Former chairman and CEO of IBM, Thomas J. Watson defines success as, “Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success.”

Do you feel successful when you fail?

Best-selling author, Mark Victor Hansen defines success as, “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.”

Do you think success is letting go of perfection?

Author, Kellie Snyder defines success as, “Success is achieving a goal or conquering a dilemma and feeling joyful and proud after. Success is not necessarily the result of following a specific plan because missteps often lead us to new and better opportunities. What constitutes success varies on an individual basis. One person’s success cannot be measured or compared against another’s. Success is unique. Success is moving up, pushing forward and reaching out for more. Success is what happens when we recognize the possibilities that lie before us, capitalize on our resources and work with unyielding passion and determination to make those possibilities a reality. The best part about success is that we can all acquire it. Success is limitless. Success is glorious.”

Do you believe in the uniqueness of success?

And who can forget poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s definition of success, “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Is your success defined by making the world a better place?

The dictionary defines success as, “The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. A successful performance or achievement.”

Does success have to include wealth?

Popular TED speaker, Richard St. John defines success as, “Success is a continuous journey.”
