Last weekend marked the official start of “Float Time” at our house. Despite living in Northern California, my husband and I remain deeply involved in the LaCanada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assoc. (see www.lcftra.org) in Southern California. The LaCanada T of R enters a float in the Pasadena Rose Parade on New Year’s Day each year. We are one of six “self-built” floats in the parade, which means we do not have a corporate sponsor and are 100% volunteers. This is my third year in the position of “Decorations Chair”. Its a huge job. I try to blog about all the nitty-gritty details on storilines.pnn.com.
So, the official start of “float time” adds another dimension to staying on track with my dream of becoming an accomplished rider. Its another distraction, another responsibility, another obligation. It makes all the “personal resillance” tips and other methods I use to get through my overly busy life that much more difficult but that much more important to follow.
Today, I’m taking a break. Its a sorely needed one after a long, mentally exhausting float weekend. I’m breaking most of my own rules. In particular, I’m not following my “Do Things As I Go Along” rule. I haven’t unpacked the kids’ lunch boxes, the kids themselves are working on their second hour of TV currently, there’s not room on the kitchen counter for another dish, laundry is piled on the bed (which is unmade), and clothes, shoes, and other things are strewn about the house.
That means that tomorrow I’ll have to work hard to get back on track. Maybe next week’s post will be all about how (hopefully) I did that successfully.
Nikki and I are emerging from a tough week. The arena became spooky again in Nikki’s eyes and he was jumpy. More than once, I heard myself say aloud, “Fear! Pistachios! Now!” But the important thing is that we worked through it. I keep telling myself that every difficult ride is one more step in the right direction, not backwards. And, the culmination of the difficult week was a good lesson on Saturday. Walk, trot, canter, in both directions, all the way around the ring. Yea!!!
I’m still planning on going to the schooling show on June 7. I need to have the farrier out to put Nikki’s shoe back on and confirm a trailer to get us to the show. Both of those should be easily accomplished.
Until next week . . .
