What does it take to get noticed by your market and your industry?
Being a motivational speaker in the speaking industry, I’ve noticed that we as speakers spend a lot of time wishing people would notice us – the people in our market, the people who can book us, and the other speakers in our association.
I see a lot of wringing of hands. “When is it my turn?” “When will they notice me?” “What do I have to do to get their attention?” “Why aren’t they talking about ME?” “What do I have to do to get to get to the spotlight?”
So how do we get our market and our industry to notice us? You’re probably not going to like my answer, but I’m sticking by it.
Do something worth noticing.
What is fascinating to me, is how many people are working really hard to get noticed, but not working at all on how to create something WORTH noticing.
You can’t beg and scream and bribe and ask your way to the spotlight. You don’t count the amount of years you’ve been doing this, and figure it’s about time you got yours. It’s not about standing in line. You HAVE to build a platform and a product that people are talking about. It’s not just about being “good enough”. It’s about being amazing at what you do, remarkable even. Do that, and people will notice. I PROMISE.
When times were tough for me – when the money wasn’t coming, and the calendar was empty – I adopted one business strategy that was the smartest move I ever made. It is based on a quote by Steve Martin (from his book “Still Standing”) where he says, “Be so damn good people can’t ignore you.”
To all you speakers out there, waiting to get noticed? Stop waiting and start working on creating something amazing. And here’s a hint: It starts with a phenomenal speech and an over-the-top WOW factor.
How does your speech measure up?
Perhaps THAT is the reason you’re not getting attention.
If you’re looking at your keynote speech and seeing that it is lacking – that it could be bumped up a couple of notches, putting you in a higher fee category – then I can help. The first place I suggest you look is Kelly’s Keynote camp. www.keynotecamp.com This is the place where we roll up our sleeves and work on YOUR masterpiece in a wonderful small group setting.
